An Ode to Social Media...

We all have had our first loves, whether it was a high school sweetheart, a next door neighbor, a boy band frontman or pizza! Either way, our first love experiences start with a story to tell and we’re telling ‘em! This is an ode to the first love experiences we had with the social media world...

An ode to MySpace. We all had one - just not the same Top 8 because we ALL know that changed on the daily. Shout-out to those html Kings out there for being able to change their Top 8 to 16. You’re the real MySpace winners. Either way, MySpace gave us a space (ha!) for personal expression, a way to tell others about our favorite things, digitally! Colors, glitter, friends, shiny stickers and a wall for posts. How rad was it to have a song load every time someone visited your page? Was it an r&b song, your college fight song or just a Panic at the Disco medley?

Whether we like to admit it or not, we loved our MySpace account. It was a digital communication tool when you couldn’t reach someone via text or a newbie you just met in class or at a coffee shop. It gave us a chance to connect with friends, see what our crushes were up to and definitely kept you up to date on the 1,000 wishes your friend received after she was the first to post on your wall. Aren’t you still wondering if she used all those wishes?

An ode to Blogger. A place to just talk about your beef with something or someone or maybe something you were forced to get because of a marketing class exploring the early makings of a digital world. Blogger was a space to speak your mind, tell a story or just vent a bit. Nowadays blogs are built on robust platforms with much detail included and make serious advertising money! But hey, if you could go back and read your first blog, I’m sure we would all be proud! Write on..(ha)!

An ode to The Facebook. Yup. Wasn’t it Justin Timberlake’s character in the Social Network who suggested removing “the” from Facebook? The days when you could only setup a Facebook account with college email and your profile photo was the size of a quarter? We loved the chance to connect with new people from class, send messages about tomorrow’s assignment or even pursue someone’s photo album titled “Hangin’ in the Dorms” or “Tailgating with My Peeps.” It was a classic and is still today. Little did we know it would become a marketing giant in the digital world!

We want to hear about your favorites. Share with us, tell us your “Ode to…” stories and how you first entered the social media universe. I mean, at the heart of it, isn’t it just really about communicating!

Yours Truly,

Matchbox Marketing

PS. If you share this blog post, you will receive a 1,000 wishes or is it good luck for 100 years? Ugh, we can’t remember! ;)
